Lee Chang  Professor Emeritus

Education background

Graduated from Fu Jen University, Peking, in 1946 with a B.Sc. degree, and obtained a Ph.D. degree (physics) from the University of Leningrad , Russia, in 1956.

Experience

I joined the faculty of Tsinghua University, Beijing, in 1957, and helped in the organization and administration of the then newly established engineering physics department as deputy chairman for undergraduate and graduate education from 1958, and became the chairman in 1981. I transferred to the department of physics in 1982 and served as the chairman from 1982 to 1984, as the director of the Institute of Modern Physics of Tsinghua University from 1982 to 1990.

Concurrent Academic

I held visiting appointments abroad, as research associate in the Institute of Physics, University of Leningrad 1956-1957, as visiting scientist, Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen 1963-1964, as visiting associate, California Institute of Technology 1980-1981 and as visiting professor of the same Institute in 1987-1988.

Research Status

As a faculty member of Tsinghua University, I have been involved in the teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses in physics and theoretical physics and in the supervision of graduate students working toward the M. Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. My research in theoretical physics includes the theory of annihilation in many electron systems, resulting in a formalism first established for such a problem. The research on spinor helicity technique led to results widely used by colleagues in the high energy physics community in calculating many particle amplitudes, and was later dubbed“The Chinese Magic”. I have a number of papers published by leading journals in physics. A graduate textbook “Developments of Modern Physics” for which I am the editor and one of the contributors, was published in Beijing in 1997 and won the title of “Priority Textbook” of the State Education Commission in 1997. A monograph“Frontier Problems in Quantum Mechanics” (in English, co-authored by Prof. Mo-linGe) is now in press and will be published jointly by Tsinghua University Press and World Scientific in Singapore.

Honors And Awards

Awards include the distinguished service certificate, State Education Commission PR China in 1991, First Class Award for Teaching Excellence, Beijing Municipality in 1997.
