Instructors:Prof. Alexander W. Chao, SLAC

Purpose and AudienceThis course is designed for graduate students who want to learn the basic physics of accelerators.

PrerequisitesClassical mechanics, electrodynamics, and physical or engineering mathematics, all at entrance graduate level.

Instructional MethodThe course includes a series of lectures with distributed lecture notes. Homework problems are assigned daily. There will be an open-book final exam.

Course ContentThe emphasis is to introduce the physical principles of modern accelerators and their main engineering components. Linear accelerators and storage rings are used to illustrate these principles. Beam physics topics include particle motion dynamics, beam confinement and guidance, beam acceleration, synchrotron radiation and its effects on the beam. Physics of accelerator components such as magnets, and radiofrequency cavities are also discussed. Lectures are delivered in Chinese.

Credit RequirementsStudents will be evaluated based on Final exam (50%), Homework assignments and class participation (50%).

About the Instructors Alex Chao works at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Stanford University. His specialty is accelerator physics. He received Ph.D. from Stony Brook University under the supervision of Professor Chenning Yang in 1974 in the field of high energy physics. After graduation he went to SLAC and switched field to accelerator physics. He considers accelerator physics most exciting and rewarding.
